Colorado Springs is a key location in the mission of Air Force Space Command. The 50th Space Wing based at Schriever Air Force Base is the command center for maintaining and operation of the more than 180 satellites controlled by the United States. The 21st Space Wing headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base is essential to national security, providing early warning of ballistic missile attacks while also monitoring objects and activity in space.

The command and control is in Colorado Springs, but the mission requires a worldwide system of support. News 5 went along with the Air Force for a rare look at what are called “geographically separated units.” They are strategically positioned locations and the world, where massive antennas and radar towers monitor, communicate and relay information from air and space to command staff in Colorado Springs. The first story is Thursday night at 10:00 on News 5.
