Rio, the golf dog, reigns at King’s Deer Golf Club

The most popular name at King’s Deer Golf Club works long hours but mostly lays around waiting for his next meal.

Rio works alongside owner and buddy Mark Hassell, the head golf course superintendent at the course in Monument, and also serves as resident mascot for the course.

The six-year-old yellow labrador retriever rides in Hassell’s cart as he cuts cups for the day and keep’s him company but Rio’s biggest daily task? Chasing the geese off the course and keeping order for the other birds occupying the airspace. According to Hassell, Rio is the main reason why you won’t see more than one or two geese on the course.

And his fame has been well documented, appearing on the course’s Instagram page more than once.

If you tee it up there soon, be sure to bring a dog biscuit for Rio and thank him for keeping the course goose free.
