DENVER — A citywide curfew will remain in effect in Denver this week, as officials work to curb protests that have led to tension between crowds and police over the last four nights.

Mayor Michael Hancock on Monday extended the curfew, beginning each night at 9 p.m. and ending at 5 a.m. each morning, through Friday morning.

Large crowds protested the death of Minnesota black man George Floyd through the weekend, gathering near the State Capitol in Denver. On Sunday night, protesters marched along East Colfax Avenue, where police dispersed the crowds with tear gas and pepper balls.

More protests were expected in the same area for Monday, and some crowds were already beginning to form early in the afternoon.

Violators of the curfew face fines up to $999 and up to 300 days in jail.
