UPDATE - A suspect was hospitalized in serious but stable condition Wednesday after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement officers during an attempted arrest on Colorado Springs' east side, according to police.

The shooting happened just after 2 p.m. near the Aviator Apartments, located at Murray Boulevard and Sawyer Way.

The Colorado Springs Police Department said its Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force was attempting to arrest a wanted person when officers approached a vehicle. Police said the suspect opened fire, striking the windshield of a patrol vehicle.

Officers and at least one deputy returned fire, striking the suspect, according to Ira Cronin, public relations manager for the Colorado Springs Police Department.

“The individual has an active arrest warrant and was known by law enforcement to be armed and dangerous,” Cronin added.

Deputies with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Impact Team and members of the Colorado Springs Police Department's Tactical Enforcement Unit also responded to assist.

Police have not released the suspect's identity or details about the arrest warrant, citing the ongoing investigation.

The shooting prompted road closures along North Murray Boulevard between Sawyer Way and Palmer Park Boulevard.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office and Colorado Bureau of Investigation are investigating the shooting and use of force.
