(NBC News) History was made in Washington Thursday as the 116th Congress was sworn in, the most diverse group of lawmakers in the nation’s history.

It’s also a switch of power, with Democrats taking control of the House for the first time in eight years.

The first female Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, once again has the gavel.

Pelosi took the oath surrounded by children and grandchildren of house members, including her own.
