PUEBLO – Voters in Pueblo County rejected a proposal to raise the marijuana sales tax from 3.5% to 5.5% and change the methodology for calculating the excise tax. Had it passed, question 1A would have made the total sales tax paid by consumers for retail marijuana 6.5%, when you include the County’s 1% general retail sales tax.
The county expected to bring in $1.2 million a year for scholarships, nearly twice the amount received this year. Commissioners sought the increase to improve scholarship funding as market competition drives down wholesale retail prices on recreational marijuana.
