COLORADO SPRINGS — On Saturday, Neons Salon and Barbershop served up free back-to-school haircuts all day to kids who were preparing to jump into the upcoming school year.
The one day event labeled Cuts for Smiles is in its second year and is intended to take a little financial stress off parents while also providing school aged kids a chance to look their best as they start the 2019-2020 school year.
"You want people to be happy and look great starting middle school or first grade, you want them to feel great about themselves. I think that's the most important part for the kids, just feeling very happy and confident about their hair," commented Anna Marie Bray, an owner of Neons.
"Their whole world [can be] changed, because they feel good, they look good, and they want to do good, " continued Gerald Bray, another owner of Neons.
In its first year, the now annual event reported that barbers provided nearly 200 free haircuts, this year the barbershop and salon hopes to push that number past 250.
The event is scheduled to run until 7:00 pm Saturday evening, owners asking that those receiving free haircuts donate $5-$10 to their barbers.
Owners of the shop and salon plan to continue Cuts for Smiles in years to come, hoping to provide more and more free back-to-school haircuts.
"One of the things that we are trying to accomplish is to grow bigger and bigger and bigger so that we can give back more and more," finished Gerald.
