ALAMOSA — The victim of a shooting at an Alamosa protest Thursday is in stable condition after being shot in the back of the head, according to the family.

The Alamosa Police Department said the shooting took place Thursday afternoon on Main Street and State Avenue.

Authorities said 49-year-old Danny Pruitt, of Cañon City, was initially treated at San Luis Valley Health and later flown to UCHealth Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs for further treatment.

Alyssa Hatcher, Pruitt's niece, organized a GoFundMe Saturday for Pruitt that has raised nearly $97,000 as of Monday. She wrote on the page that he is a disabled veteran and a single father. Following the shooting, Hatcher wrote protesters "knew he was shot in the head and they ran away."

Hatcher posted an update Sunday that Pruitt is in stable condition after doctors placed a drain in his head for fluid to "hopefully reduce the swelling on his brain." Medical staff is still running tests and they will know more next week, according to Hatcher.

The exact circumstances of the shooting is under investigation, but Capt. Joey Spangler of the APD charged 27-year-old Alamosa resident James Marshall with attempted second-degree homicide, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, felony menacing, criminal mischief, illegal discharge of a firearm, and prohibited use of weapons.

Spangler also confirmed that 30 to 40 people were at the protest Thursday evening.
