COLORADO SPRINGS — The Colorado Springs Police Department now says the driver killed early Wednesday was a teen who took a family vehicle. The name of the 14-year-old is not being released by authorities.
CSPD said a white SUV was being pulled over for a traffic stop on North Murray Boulevard and Pikes Peak Avenue around 3:00 a.m. when the driver sped off, just two minutes before authorities received the call of a rollover in front of a home on Pikes Peak Avenue between Ruskin Drive to Byron Drive.
The teen was found dead inside the SUV, yet at the time was not known if the boy was the driver or a passenger. A witness claimed to see someone run from the wrecked vehicle, something police have not confirmed.
Police said they used dogs and a drone to try and locate the person who ran from the scene.
At this time, investigators say the teen took the SUV from a family member without permission.
This is the 35th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year, according to police. This time last year we had 39 traffic fatalities.
Police say this is still an open investigation and ask anyone with information to call the department at (719) 444-7000.
