ROCKY FORD — A Rocky Ford police officer faces charges of distribution of a controlled substance and official misconduct stemming from an incident in December 2019.
James Lopez is accused of trying to sell marijuana confiscated during a police investigation.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation says after confiscating the drugs, Lopez allegedly took about a pound to the home of an acquaintance who is not associated with law enforcement, then packaged it for distribution.
District Attorney James Bullock filed charges against Lopez on Feb. 25, and a felony summons was issued.
Lopez is expected to appear in Otero District Court in La Junta on March 30.
The Rocky Ford Police Department placed him on administrative leave in January.
The investigation is ongoing.
