COLORADO SPRINGS — The memorial to the only commercial aircraft accident in the history of the Colorado Springs Airport recently got a facelift.
Earlier this month, volunteers from El Paso County Parks and from the airport repaired the monument to those killed when United Flight 585 crashed into Widefield Park on March 3, 1991. Twenty passengers and five crew died.
Workers said it's important to keep the memory alive.
"Just an incredible tragedy, but something in the field of aviation that we need to remember," said COS Director of Aviation Greg Phillips.
The gazebo got a new roof. Trees and landscaping were also upgraded.
