PUEBLO — The Pueblo County Jail is working to reduce the number of inmates struggling with mental illness in their facility.

The Step Up Program initiated by commissioners aims to provide services and treatment to low-level offenders suffering from mental illness.

"We got a lot of work to do," said Pueblo County Commissioner Garrison Ortiz. "The resolution was nice to finally pass, but we really need to work hard to get this program up and give help to folks who really need it."

The program has pooled together the resources of law enforcement agencies, local governments, and programs around Pueblo.
