Pueblo County managing funds for new jail construction

PUEBLO — The process of building a new jail in Pueblo County is going to take some more work.

Voters on election day approved ballot measure 1B, to raise the marijuana sales tax to six percent next year.

Most of that money will go toward capital improvements, and while there are a few other projects most of the focus will be on building a new jail since the jail tax failed to pass.

"So we have a lot of numbers to crunch, we have a lot meetings with our finance and building experts to see if there is really something we can work with," said Pueblo County Commissioner Garrison Ortiz.

The first 50 percent of the Marijuana Excise Tax will still go toward college scholarships.
