PUEBLO — Students in Pueblo County will soon be able to ride the bus for free.
Pueblo Transit announcing it will allow kindergarten through 12th grade students to use Pueblo Transit buses with their school pass.
Local groups in Pueblo made this possible by pooling their money together to pay for the rides.
"It's really cool because if you don't have someone who can take you, you can take the bus and you can go where you need to go," said fifth grader Tyson Trujillo.
Adults will have to pay bus fares starting September 1.
Riding Pueblo Transit was free for the past five months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now Transit says the charges need to return, because bus fares make up a significant portion of its budget.
"They account approximately about 15 percent of our budget every year. What that means is it's about the equivalent to a new bus almost it is a significant part of our operations," said operations supervisor Nick Hinrichsen.
