COLORADO SPRINGS — The man accused of threatening several people with a gun and firing shots in central Colorado Springs is facing charges of first degree attempted murder, felony menacing and illegal discharge of a weapon.
41-year-old Thomas Merrill Smith is being held in the El Paso County Jail on a $50,000 bond. Police have not released any information on a possible motive for the incident on Wednesday night.
According to police, a woman called 911 to report a man pointing and shooting a gun at people near E. Platte Ave and Union Blvd. At least one car was struck by bullets.
Officers set up a perimeter just north of Memorial Park as they zeroed in on the suspect. Smith was arrested a few minutes later.
The only booking photo available of Smith appears to show him being uncooperative as he was being processed. An officer's gloved hand is plainly visible appearing to hold Smith's head still as the photo was taken.
