Winter storm brings snow, strong wind speeds

COLORADO SPRINGS — Another winter storm is working it's way out of southern Colorado tonight. A few flurries may pop up along the way and windy conditions will be present east of I-25.

News5 and the First Alert5 Weather Team has you covered on-air, online and on social media for all the information you need on storm conditions, road conditions, any closures and delays, and what you need to know before you head out the door.

Thanksgiving Day is coming up quickly, which makes this an extremely busy travel week. The weather has impacted at least a thousand flights at Denver International Airport.

I-25

Northbound/Southbound I-25 between the New Mexico border and Pueblo is dry tonight.

I-25 in both directions between Colorado Springs and the Wyoming border- Wet, icy and snowpacked in spots. Show caution on bridges, ramps and overpasses. Watch for black ice as those wet areas freeze over tonight.

I-70

I-70 continues to be a challenge for drivers tonight. Both directions Eastbound/Westbound between the Kansas border and Denver-Icy, snowpacked conditions. This stretch of I-70 saw various closures through Tuesday. Show caution and drop your speeds.

I-70 between Denver and Glenwood Springs - It will continue to be a challenging drive in the high country in the overnight hours. Expect a mixed bag of conditions as you travel through the I-70 corridor. You'll find icy and snowpacked lanes, blowing and drifting snow in some areas near the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnels and possibly poor visibility at times. DO NOT make this drive if you are unsure of your tires and make sure to carry either chains or an alternative traction device before you head west. PASSENGER VEHICLE TRACTION LAW is in effect between Georgetown and Vail. Passenger vehicles are required to have snow or mud/snow tires, use chains/alternative traction devices, or be a 4WD/AWD vehicle.

I-70 between Glenwood Springs and the Utah border-a few wet spots in and around Glenwood Springs. Everything west of there is dry into Utah.

US 6

Eastbound/Westbound US 6 over Loveland Pass. PASSENGER VEHICLE TRACTION LAW is in effect. Passenger vehicles are required to have snow or mud/snow tires, use chains/alternative traction devices, or be a 4WD/AWD vehicle. COMMERCIAL VEHICLE CHAIN LAW is in effect. Chains or alternative traction devices (ATDs) required for all CMV, including buses and vans of 16+ capacity.

I-76

I-76 between Lochbuie and the Nebraska border was completely closed for the majority of Tuesday. It reopened at about 4:00 p.m. and while conditions have improved some, it will be an icy, snowpacked drive in both directions.

US 285

Northbound/Southbound 285 between Morrison and Pine Jct. PASSENGER VEHICLE TRACTION LAW. Passenger vehicles are required to have snow or mud/snow tires, use chains/alternative traction devices, or be a 4WD/AWD vehicle.

CO 86

Eastbound/Westbound CO 86 between Kiowa and I-70- CLOSED due to adverse weather conditions. There is no estimated time of reopening.

6:00 p.m.

Westbound I-70 at Dowd Jct. in the high country is now reopened after a fatal semi crash. The roads are icy and snow packed and will continue to be throughout the night. Keep your speeds down.

4:30 p.m.

Eastbound/Westbound I-70 between Copper Mtn. and Vail-PASSENGER VEHICLE TRACTION LAW in effect, Passenger vehicles are required to have snow or mud/snow tires, use chains/alternative traction devices, or be a 4WD/AWD vehicle.

2:45 p.m.

Eastbound/Westbound I-76 remains CLOSED between Lochbuie and the Nebraska State Line due to adverse weather conditions.

Westbound I-70 from the Kansas border to Denver is now open. Roads are icy in areas.

2:36 p.m.

Northbound/Southbound I-25 between Baptist Rd. and Lincoln Avenue -The passenger vehicle traction law is no longer in effect. Roads are wet and slushy with splashback causing visibility issues. Make sure you have plenty of windshield wiper fluid before you head out.

12:56 p.m.

Right lanes blocked on I-25 southbound between Happy Canyon Road and Meadows Parkway due to a crash.

11:39 a.m.

Right lanes blocked on I-25 northbound between Cimarron Street and Dry Creek Road.

10:37 a.m.

Right lane blocked on I-25 southbound at Corporate due to vehicle vs. guard rail crash.

10:20 a.m.

Highway 40 between Kit Carson and Kansas is closed due to road conditions. Colorado State Patrol also reports Highway 385 is blocked by a roll over semi-truck at MM 165.

10:02 a.m.

Highway 24 is now open in both directions between Calhan and Limon, according to CDOT. Use caution while driving this road.

9:28 a.m.

We're seeing impressive snow totals across the region this morning. Here at the Rockrimmon studios for KOAA News 5 there's at least 9.5" of snow on the ground.

8:35 a.m.

Eastbound I-70 is now open between Dowd Junction and Post Boulevard following a crash. Westbound is still closed for HAZMAT investigation. Colorado State Patrol says eastbound traffic is backing up, so use caution if you are driving that way.

8:22 a.m.

La Veta pass is closed due to weather conditions.

7:58 a.m.

Safety closure set on Highway 24 in both directions from Calhan to Limon due to weather.

7:44 a.m.

7:35 a.m.

Westbound I-70 is closed at Beaver Brook; Floyd Hill due to "major rock slide," according to CDOT. The road is also closed near Idaho Springs due to rocks on the road.

7:33 a.m.

Peterson Air Force Base and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station has updated to mission-essential only status. Non-mission essential personnel do not report.

7:30 a.m.

Left lane is blocked on northbound I-25 between Exit 101 - CO 47; US 50 and Exit 102 - Eagleridge Boulevard.

7:21 a.m.

Right lane blocked on I-25 northbound between County Line Road and Rancho Colorado Boulevard. There is a stalled vehicle. CDOT says to expect delays.

7:09 a.m.

UCCS is closed today due to inclement weather. All classes and activities are canceled.

6:53 a.m.

I-70 is closed in both directions between Dowd Junction and Post Boulevard due to fatal crash. Closure expected to last most of the day.

6:50 a.m.

Crash on I-25 southbound between Young Hollow and Pinon. Left lane is blocked and watch for emergency vehicles.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office announced its Administrative Office will be closed today.

6:05 a.m.

Meterologist Sam Schreier says snowfall is still falling heavily across the Wet Mountain Valley, as well as Canon City through the Wet Mountains, with blowing snow in Pueblo.

Right now, there is a break in snowfall in Colorado Springs.

6:00 a.m.

Eastbound I-70 closed between Manila Road and Bennett, according to CDOT.

5:53 a.m.

El Paso Clerk and Recorder's Office branches announced they are closed today due to the weather.

5:36 a.m.

CO 83 in both directions is now open at Lake Gulch Road following a crash.

5:31 a.m.

Fort Carson announced it will be closed today instead of delayed. Fort Carson reporting is currently Mission Essential and Emergency Services Personnel only. Click here for a full list of closures and delays.

5:30 a.m.

Blizzard warnings and blizzard conditions are taking place in Douglas and Elbert Counties this morning, as well as areas stretched northeast across the plains.

5:13 a.m.

The City of Colorado Springs said its snow plows are chaining up to help work throughout the morning.

5:10 a.m.

CO 83 Northbound and Southbound has a full closure in both directions at Lake Gulch Road due to a crash.

The Colorado Department of Transportation has closed I-70 from Airpark Road to Burlington due to the weather. There is no estimated time of reopening.

CDOT says there is no closure on Floyd Hill.
