Southwest service coming to Colorado Springs has been something community leaders in the Pikes Peak Region have wanted for years. The COVID upheaval in the airline industry pushed for rethinking Southwest’s flight network. New business plans include adding new airports and routes.
The Colorado Springs deal happened quickly. Initial contact with Southwest started the first week of September. Weeks later Southwest executives visited Colorado Springs. “It was a serious look. A two day look on October 1st and 2nd,” said COS Airport Aviation Director, Greg Phillips.
The deal was announced the third week of October. A the just announced flights are ready for booking before the end of the month. “Things moved, particular in the airline industry lightning fast,” said Phillips.
