COLORADO SPRINGS — Governor Jared Polis declared this week "Older Drive Safety Awareness Week" in Colorado.

The group Health Promotion Partners provides a number of services to older drivers, including testing their skills behind the wheel and if necessary, making recommendations to the DMV.

Doctor Terri Cassidy said that being able to drive safely not only allows older people to remain active in the community, it also helps with their sense of independence.

"Driving is a really important topic, and a lot of people don't want to give up driving because they don't want to give up their independence, and we really want to express that point that those two do not have to go hand in hand," Cassidy said.

The organization works with older drivers and also helps their families when it comes time to have that difficult discussion about hanging up the keys.
