COLORADO SPRINGS — Being a foster parent can be tough in the best of times, but it's been especially difficult during the coronavirus pandemic.
On Saturday, Foster Source worked with the First Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs to give away free freezer meals, diapers, and gift cards to foster families.
The organization provides support to foster families statewide. The couple who started the charity say their own experience as foster parents helped show them the kind of guidance other families could use.
"Something like a pandemic makes that anxiety rise even more, so we see increased behaviors. there's a risk of placements being disrupted, and really during a pandemic, there is no place for the kids to go. so we really need to focus on nourishing the foster parents, so that everybody can continue to stay where they're at," explains Renee Bernhard, President and Executive Director of Foster Source.
Foster families do receive a stipend to help care for children, but Renee says it's usually not enough to cover all of the costs.
