LAS ANIMAS COUNTY — A wildfire is burning in a rural area in eastern Las Animas County.
The blaze is closest to the town of Kim, about 60 miles east of Trinidad. There is not much information available on the fire as of Wednesday night. There are no reports yet on how the fire started or current acreage.
Some folks who live in the area told News5 that it appears to be moving quickly. The area experienced dry and windy conditions. News5 viewer Kristie Jackson shared video of the fire from Wednesday night.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has issued an air quality health advisory due to smoke in the area.
Other recent fires
According to the Las Animas County Emergency Manager Kim Chavez, another fire ignited Wednesday off of Picketwire Road. The Picketwire Fire began as a structure fire and grew into a wildland fire. It is now 100 percent contained.
Chavez also told News5 that yet another fire was started by lightning on Tuesday. The Cherry Canyon Fire is burning deep in Cherry Canyon in eastern Las Animas County. This fire has burned approximately 80 to 100 acres. It is being monitored by Kim Fire, DFPC, Branson VFD, and other fire crews. No containment is known at this time, according to the Emergency Manager.
