COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — Hundreds of local families ready for Christmas thanks to the generosity of Christmas Tree Project. The annual giveaway started ten years ago in Colorado Springs with $20 and a Craigslist ad as a way to provide a free, fully decorated Christmas tree to families in need.

It's since become a national and international effort. Organizers received more than 16,000 requests from people in 47 states and other countries.

Rhiannon Blackett said she was grateful for the charity's generosity during a tough year financially for her family. She said wanted to show her daughter the spirit of the season.

"Even though times can be tough, we can still stick through it, and there are still people in this world that are kind and giving," Blackett said.

She plans to participate in the giveaway next year as a volunteer to help give back to the project.
