COLORADO SPRINGS — If you drive by Cheyenne Mountain High School, you will notice a change to their sign outside of the school.

The Indian mascot is no longer there.

According to a draft resolution adopted by the Cheyenne Mountain Board of Education, the school is looking to change their mascot and phase out the Indian mascot name by August 1st, 2021, citing several national Native American organizations who oppose its use.

The school district moved forward with the change following a public debate, as well as an online petition, that generated over 2,000 signatures.

The board will still need to vote on the mascot change to make it official.

No date has been set by the board to make that vote.
