CAÑON CITY — A man has died after a crash involving a pedestrian outside of a Cañon City grocery store Wednesday afternoon.
Cañon City police said 87-year-old Robert Sergeant hit a 68-year-old man in the City Market parking lot off Fremont Drive. The victim was rushed to St. Thomas More Hospital and was flown to Colorado Springs for treatment where he died later Wednesday night.
Police said the preliminary investigation showed that Sergeant appeared to accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake when he pulled into a parking space. Investigators said Sergeant's Ford Focus also hit a parked vehicle, which pushed into another vehicle. CCPD said he didn't show any signs of impairment and he had no previous driving convictions. Police said prosecutors have not yet announced if charges will be filed.
Authorities have not yet released the victim's name.
