COLORADO SPRINGS — Saturday, Special Olympics athletes, coaches, and family members were at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs for opening ceremonies of the Summer Classic.

Athletes competed in cycling, softball, and bocce.

Those who work at the games say the competition is about more than winning a ribbon, it's about a sense of belonging.

"Don't think of yourself as being an outsider. You're always welcome. Just do things to the best of your ability, that's all anyone can ask of you," said volunteer, Richard Garcia.

Sunday, you can help Special Olympics athletes across Colorado. The "Tip a Cop" fundraiser is happening at Chili's restaurants statewide. You can find a list of participating restaurants here.
