COLORADO SPRINGS — Three people and two dogs were able to safely make it out of a structure fire in northwestern Colorado Springs early Friday morning, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
The fire was initially reported to be burning in a townhouse complex at 1400 Oak Hill Drive just before 1 a.m., but it's not clear if it was a single family or multi-family structure.
At one point, a part of the home collapsed causing a shift in the fire department's response.
"While the crews were fighting the fire, there was a partial collapse of the deck so we had to pull our crews out and we called a defensive fire at that time. And with the amount of fire that was inside we didn't have any crews go inside because of what was going on in there," said Mike Smaldino, captain public information officer with the department.
The department said one person was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Neighbors received an emergency alert about a large structure fire in northwestern Colorado Springs. The Colorado Springs Police Departmenttweeted residents in the area were under a voluntary evacuation notice, but that has since been lifted.
The neighborhood where the fire started is heavily wooded, and it sparked a grass fire that's estimated to have burned between 1/2 acre and 1 acre.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
