UCCS responds to online petition, says issue is a misunderstanding

Posted

COLORADO SPRINGS – UCCS is getting some attention online over a change.org petition they say is a misunderstanding.

A student with special needs started the petition and said students with intellectual disabilities aren’t allowed to walk at graduation.

The university said these students are a part of a new certificate program, are set to graduate next year, and typically certificate graduates don’t walk at commencement, only degree graduates.

“This was started by a student, so they got their information from someone, but we’re trying to work through and clear up any misunderstanding in the process,” said UCCS representative Jared Verner.

The university said they are looking at doing some sort of recognition ceremony for these students.

The program is also available two other schools in the state.
