COLORADO SPRINGS – We have a lot of unique wildlife in Colorado, so it is not uncommon to see deer, rabbits, coyotes, and even bighorn sheep in Garden of the Gods.

But last week someone reported seeing a hyena! The animal is native to Africa.

On Friday, April 12th, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Southeast Region Office tweeted the following.

“Actual report to Colo State Patrol relayed to @COParksWildlife at 7 p.m. Thursday: “Reporting Party reported that he saw a hyena in front of the Garden of the Gods Trading Post – It ran in front of him.” Is there a Garden of the Gods Trading Post in Africa where hyenas live?”

Judging by the word choice, it’s safe to say that CPW in no way believes there is an African hyena running around on the west side of Colorado Springs.

A gentleman who commented on the Twitter post did say he has spotted a very strange looking coyote in the park and included a very blurry picture. It’s tough to say, but perhaps that is what the reporting party saw.
