DENVER – The VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System is encouraging veterans to get help if they are thinking about suicide.

The facility hosted an ‘Operation SAVE’ training on Monday.

The program teaches veterans and their families how to recognize the signs of suicide.

SAVE is an acronym and stand for, Signs of Suicide, Asking About Suicide, Validating Feelings, and Encouraging Help.

“A lot of people have the misconception that asking someone how they’re feeling or if they’re having those thoughts might encourage or plant those thoughts,” said Dr. Andrea Rehmert. “But that’s really not true.”

The program is available to veterans registered at the VA. They just need to contact the facility and tell them they are interested in the Operation SAVE Program. The program makes house calls, and it’s free.
