SAN JUAN COUNTY – The Undersheriff in San Juan County is recovering in the hospital after being shot in the face.

News 5 has learned that Undersheriff Steve Lowrance was struck in the cheek by the bullet fired by a female driver who took her own life.

The woman is identified by a local publication as Amanda Maes of Colorado Springs.

Lowrance was reportedly trying to stop Maes from shooting herself.
