SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS – Prior to opening Red Mountain Pass on Friday, CDOT crews had to remove huge icicles, weighing hundreds of pounds, that were dangling from the cliff above the highway.
According to CDOT, the icicles were so big they had to be blasted off the side of the cliff above the highway. A CDOT spokesperson said they posed a threat to travelers if they were to fall.
The icicles were blasted, fell to the road, and then crews swept away the broken ice.
The department posted a video of the clean up to their Facebook page.
