OURAY – The Colorado Department of Transportation posted Friday that Red Mountain Pass could stay closed for “a few weeks” to clear snow from avalanches.
CDOT said avalanche mitigation work happened Friday morning has created unsafe conditions for workers to clear feet of snow off of the highway.
CDOT said when conditions are safe, two teams with heavy equipment on separate ends of the closure will work together to meet in the middle to clear Highway 550.
Red Mountain Pass has been closed since avalanche mitigation efforts began on March 4. Since then, the San Juans have been slammed with new snow, adding to avalanche danger in the backcountry.
