(NBC News) Illinois State Police say the gunman who killed five people and wounded several police officers at an Aurora manufacturing plant Friday should not have had a gun.
Investigators said Saturday that Gary Martin had been ordered to surrender his firearm, the same 40 caliber pistol used in the shooting, five years ago after a felony conviction. He never complied.
Martin opened fire Friday during a meeting in which he was being fired. Five of his coworkers were killed; four responding police officers were shot and two more were wounded before Martin was killed.
