EL PASO COUNTY – The El Paso County Sheriff’s office confirms a suspect is in custody for a homicide earlier Friday.

Just before 10 p.m., the sheriff’s office tweeted that Emilio Esteban Espinoza was arrested without incident. The CSPD Tactical Enforcement Unit assisted EPCSO in the arrest.

Right now, it’s unclear what relationship, if any, Espinoza had with the victim. Investigators have not released the victim’s identity either.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office was looking for a homicide suspect after a shooting Friday afternoon at a home near the intersection of Hampton and Lashelle.

Deputies were called to the area around 3 p.m. and found a man shot and killed inside the home.

At that point, investigators did not release a suspect description. They obtained a search warrant for the home. Lashelle Avenue is closed until further notice while the investigation continues.

The area is near southeastern Colorado Springs, but outside the city limits. The scene investigators are working is less than a mile from the Pikes Peak Community College Centennial Campus and Stratmoor Hills Elementary School.

The crime understandably shook those that live and work nearby.

Candice Crawford told News 5 it’s normally a nice neighborhood, and that she was shocked to see all of the lights, crime tape and law enforcement personnel.

“Someone lost their life, and it’s just like right across the street… It’s frightening to think that something like that could happen to me, to my husband or my kids,” Crawford said.

Darnell Moxie reiterated that message. He received an alert from nearby Stratmoor Hills Elementary, where his son goes to school.

“Being a dad having this kind of crime so close to my house is a little unsettling,” Moxie said.
