COLORADO SPRINGS – Colorado Springs police say recklessness and alcohol are contributing factors in a vehicle crash that left one person dead early Friday morning at the intersection of North Academy Boulevard and Palmer Park Boulevard.

The crash happened around midnight. Officers say 31-year-old Vincent Meisman was traveling west on Palmer Park Blvd., approaching North Academy Blvd. Witnesses say Meisman ran a red light, and a Honda Civic headed south on Academy hit the passenger side of Meisman’s car.

The passenger in Meisman’s car, 36-year-old Joseph Tipton of Colorado Springs, died at the scene.

Meisman was taken to the hospital for his injuries. There’s no word on his condition, but officers suspect he was driving under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested for Careless Driving and Vehicular Homicide.

The driver of the Honda was not injured.

The intersection was closed for several hours while police investigated how the crash happened. All lanes reopened just before 4:30 a.m.
