El Paso County Sheriff’s Office identifies suspect in officer-involved shooting

COLORADO SPRINGS – The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting last Saturday.

Deputies said Bill Akes, 58, was armed with a hatchet when officers approached him in the parking lot of the Elevate Apartments a little before 5 a.m. Saturday morning.

According to investigators, Akes was in a stolen vehicle and struggled with officers before officers fired shots.  However, authorities didn’t provide further details about what led up to the shooting.

Akes died from his injuries at the scene. No officers were hurt.

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office is trying to get in touch with Katie Thomas Akes. She is asked to contact them at 719-390-2450.

Colorado Springs police officers involved in the shooting were placed on routine paid administrative leave. The sheriff’s office is investigating the shooting.
