PUEBLO WEST – The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office said a woman is in the hospital and a man is dead following a car chase and an officer-involved shooting in Pueblo West Sunday night.

No deputies were hurt.

Authorities said the woman who was driving the car during the chase was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Deputies said a male passenger in the suspect’s car died at the scene. Their names have not been released.

According to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office, it all started with a car chase in Fremont County that traveled east on Highway 50. According to authorities, the suspect hit a Fremont County Sheriff’s Office vehicle and nearly hit a Cañon City police car.

Pueblo County deputies joined the chase around 10:30 p.m. when they performed a PIT maneuver near Platteville Boulevard and Matt Drive that pushed the car into an open field in Pueblo West.

Deputies said the driver drove through the field and started driving on McClave Drive. That’s when deputies executed a second PIT maneuver that forced the driver into the yard of a home in the 700 block of Chaparral Drive.

According to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office, that’s when the suspect drove toward deputies, which caused one of them to fire shots.

The deputy’s name has not been released. The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is normal procedure.

The10th Judicial District Critical Incident Team is investigating the shooting.
