COLORADO SPRINGS – Colorado Springs Police said a man is dead after a car hit him while crossing N. Academy Boulevard at Austin Bluffs Parkway Thursday night.

CSPD said the man crossed the street in a spot where there wasn’t a crosswalk when it happened. Investigators said the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. We’re told us that speed, drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.

The victim has not yet been identified. Northbound lanes of Academy Boulevard were closed for more than three hours while officers investigated the crash. The road reopened around 11:45 p.m. Thursday.

The crash is the second traffic death in Colorado Springs this year, and it follows the deadliest year ever on the roads in Colorado Springs. In 2018, 48 people died in traffic crashes.

Through the month of October in 2018, CSPD issued 33,000 traffic citations in an effort to prevent this type of accident.

CSPD leaders want everyone to be aware of the dangers on the roads for drivers and pedestrians and hope people will have those conversations at home.

CSPD also plans to continue strict traffic enforcement in 2019 to try to save lives.
