PUEBLO – Pueblo Police said a girl taken from a Pueblo elementary school by her mother Monday morning is safe and is with her father.

There were some tense moments Monday after police issued an alert to help find 25-year-old Chante Quintana and 6-year-old Zanilah Roze Baros. Baros was taken from South Park Elementary School in Pueblo.

Pueblo District 60 Spokesperson Dalton Sprouse released a statement, which said the school did not release Baros to her mother.

“All schools have in place very tight and specific procedures regarding safety, including the release of students to approved contacts. In this particular instance, the parent did not follow the school procedures and in fact, circumvented the protocols established by the school.”

Police stopped short of issuing an AMBER alert in the case, but they did classify the case as a parental kidnapping.

The statement also said that the district worked with police to investigate the kidnapping. No other details explaining how Quintana managed to get the child have been released.
