WASHINGTON – As Democrats regain the majority in the House of Representatives and vote to fund the federal government, without provisions to pay for the border wall, Sen. Cory Gardner is breaking rank with Republicans.
He’s the first member of the Senate GOP to call for ending the shutdown without a deal on President Trump’s border wall.
Gardner says a funding resolution should be passed now, allowing the government to re-open, while continuing to discuss a solution to the border wall stalemate.
“Well, to be clear I support border security funding. That was in the legislation that passed the Senate last Congress. I believe in the continuing resolution that Nancy Pelosi is going to be proposing or has proposed and I’ve supported along with Democrats and Republicans 25 billion dollars for border security,” explained Sen. Gardner.
Senate President Mitch McConnell says he will not sign such a resolution without prior approval from President Trump.
