COLORADO SPRINGS – The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating a double shooting that happened just before 2 p.m. on Citadel Mall property.
Lt. Howard Black of CSPD confirms two men were wounded by gunfire outside the Hooters restaurant entrance on the southwest side of the building. One victim was found near the entrance to Hooters, while the second was found in the food court. Both are listed in serious, but stable condition. Their injuries are considered non-life threatening.
Witnesses told police the two men who were shot got into a yelling exchange with people in a red car who were driving by. At some point, someone in the car opened fire. That car and the suspects have not been found.
There are strong indications this was not a random shooting, although it is early in the investigation.
Police thought the mall might reopen this afternoon, but management made the call to remain closed overnight. It will reopen at 9 a.m.
Hundreds of people were in the mall when shots were fired. Around 3 p.m. officers started letting people leave with their cars.
Our Eric Ross is told hundreds of people were in the mall at the time of the shooting. A CSPD cruiser equipped with license plate scanners is making the rounds for a log of all vehicles at the crime scene.
News5 will continue to follow this story through the evening. Our Caiti Blase will have a report tonight at 5, 6 and 10 p.m.
You may recall there was a shooting incident inside the Citadel Mall on December 8th. Police said there was a fight near the food court in which one person pulled out a pistol and fired several shots. No one was injured.
