FLORENCE – Police identified the man suspected of injuring two officers during a chase with a stolen car in downtown Florence Wednesday.

Officers arrested 25-year-old Alexander Mitchell Wednesday after he led officers on a chase with a stolen Subaru Outback in downtown Florence and crashed into an unmarked police vehicle.

Mitchell is facing charges of aggravated motor vehicle theft, first-degree assault on a peace officer, possession of meth, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and vehicular eluding.

Police said it all started when an officer ran a plate on the vehicle Wednesday afternoon.  According to Florence PD,  the car was reported stolen out of Pueblo on Nov. 24.  When the officer approached the vehicle, they said Mitchell got into the car and ignored commands to stop and drove away.

Florence PD said he drove into downtown Florence with officers pursuing him when he collided with an unmarked police car. Authorities said the car had its emergency lights activated when the crash occurred. Police said Mitchell then left his car and took off on foot. He was eventually caught and arrested after a struggle on Pikes Peak Avenue just south on Main Street.

Police said one of the officers suffered minor injuries during the crash, the other officer was hurt during the struggle.

After his arrest, Mitchell was taken to St. Thomas More hospital. He was released shortly afterward and booked into the Fremont County Jail.
