CANON CITY — Centura Health announced this week steps they are taking to combat the nationwide opioid epidemic.

Starting now in Emergency Rooms at 22 hospitals across the state, including several in Southern Colorado, caregivers will be working to find alternative pain relief for patients.

Doctors say moving pain management away from opioids will ultimately benefit patients who will not be risking the dangers of opioid use or the addictive properties of the drugs.

Currently this opioid alternative plan is only being put into place in E.R.’s but starting next February Centura Health will also begin exploring expanding the program in clinics and inpatient facilities.
