COPPER MOUNTAIN – An empty, brand new gondola fell to the ground Monday morning during safety testing at Copper Mountain.
Safety tests were underway on the new gondola cabins on the American Eagle chairlift when the new cabin hit a piece of construction material before it fell. The company that installed the lift said the mishap wouldn’t have happened had the lift been operating under normal circumstances.
The company said the incident only caused minor damage, and it shouldn’t be a major setback for opening the lift, which features 24 gondola cabins and 96 6-person chairs
The lift is expected to open Saturday, assuming there are no further problems.
