LAS ANIMAS COUNTY – The Clerk and Recorder in Las Animas County says there will be a recount for the local elections as the final tally on several races are very close.

The closest race is the Trinidad School District Mill Levy, ballot issue 4A, which asks voters if the district can increase taxes up to $595,000 per year for ten years by the putting in place a mill levy not to exceed 5.02 mills.

The district wants to spend the increased tax revenue for the following:
restore a portion of the state’s school funding cuts necessary to recruit, train and retain quality teachers,
renovation and repair of existing facilities and grounds
acquisition and maintainance of school buses and vehicles, and
provide students and staff with technology infrastructure and equipment upgrades

Once all the votes were counted, there was only a 9 vote difference in the Yeas and the Nays, with the majority voting against. (Actual tally: Yes 2,014; No 2,077)

The other close race is the County Commissioner District 1 race where Republican Felix Lopez narrowly beat out Democrat Dean Moltrer by only 43 votes. (Actualy tally: Felix 3,169; Moltrer 3,126).

Last week there was a little controversy when nearly 100 uncounted ballots were found in a box.
