COLORADO SPRINGS – KOAA News5 is teaming up with Salsa Brava to honor outstanding teachers across southern Colorado with our Teachers First Award, and the November winner really puts her heart into teaching.
Marcy Hicks is a first grade teacher at Harrison District 2’s Stratmoor Hills Elementary School. She’s said to be selfless, putting her students and their parents first, making sure they have clothes, food and hugs. She also puts love, compassion and safety above test scores.
“It’s just absolutely amazing,” Hicks said.
Her colleagues say it’s not just the students she takes care of.
“Marcy is kind of like our mom of the family,” said fellow teacher Kristen Sacheli. “She makes sure that everybody enjoys working here and being together and keeping us all happy.”
Winners receive $500 for classroom supplies and Marcy says she plans to take her students on a special field trip with her award.
“I think we’re in a time right now where teachers are feeling underappreciated and I think people are really working hard to let teachers know that we are important and it’s just very special,” she said. “It feels good.”
Winners also receive a $100 Salsa Brava gift card and Salsa Brava will host a Happy Hour at any locations for up to six people for each winner.
