EL PASO COUNTY – The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that left a 2-year-old dead Sunday night.

The first 911 call was made around 5 p.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of Hartford Street, which is near South Academy and I-25.

When deputies and paramedics arrived, they found the child was badly hurt. The 2-year-old was taken to the hospital but did not survive.

Deputies have not released any information about what led up to the shooting, but they shut down a large area around the scene to interview people who might have information.

“It’s absolutely tragic,” said El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Media Relations Manager Jacqueline Kirby. “Any shooting we will investigate the same way. We will interview all of the witnesses, we will canvas the neighborhood, talk to the neighbors, and, again, piece together what happened here.”

A woman told News 5 she was a babysitter for the family and was heartbroken when she heard the news.

“It’s mindblowing. It hurts my stomach, actually”, said Miranda Hobbs. “He didn’t know any better.”

Deputies told News 5 that no charges were filed Sunday night.
