WIDEFIELD – Some very smart elementary school students got the chance to test themselves Saturday at a robotics competition held in Widefield.

Janitell Middle School in Widefield School District 3 hosted a scrimmage Saturday for several local elementary students to show off their scientific skills.

The district will host the regional “First Lego League” tournament next month, and they wanted to give teachers and their teams the chance to experience competition before the big event.

“It’s very quick how fast they have to put everything together,” said Technology Specialist, Kelley Stone. “So it was nice to see, in that short of a period of time, how much they were able to accomplish today.”

Teams are awarded points for the number of tasks their robots are able to complete within a set time limit. The students must design and build their robots, then use programming language to get them to complete an obstacle course of sorts.
