PUEBLO – All federal offices are closed Monday for Columbus Day and that means there will be no mail service as well.

State offices are also closed, but city and county offices are open.  Students at the major school districts through southern Colorado do have school today.

People on both sides of the Columbus Day debate are gathering at the Columbus statue on East Abriendo in Pueblo at 9:00 a.m. Monday morning.

Supporters of the holiday say they will celebrate Columbus and his voyage to America in 1492. Protesters say Columbus was a mass murderer whose life should not be celebrated. Some cities have opted to replace Columbus Day with “Indigenous People’s Day,” including Denver, Boulder and Durango. The states of Alaska, Minnesota, South Dakota and Vermont also dropped Columbus from the day.
