One-year-old ejected from car in rollover crash, driver attempted to flee scene

COLORADO SPRINGS – A one-year-old child was ejected and pinned underneath a car in a rollover crash involving a drunk driver Saturday afternoon.

The crash happened at 1000 W Colorado Ave Saturday afternoon. Police said they received reports of the accident after the driver was attempting to flee the scene and was detained by people in the area.

A gold Toyota SUV was reportedly parked on Colorado when a driver, in a pickup truck, heading east hit the parked car causing the truck to rollover, ejecting the child. The one-year-old, unrestrained at the time of the crash, was ejected and pinned underneath the truck, according to CSPD.

The child was transported to a nearby hospital for serious injuries. The Major Accident Unit responded to the scene and are the lead agency in the investigation.

It was determined that 44-year-old Wiliam James Alexander was driving eastbound when he veered to the right and hit the parked car. After he was detained by people in the area, he was arrested and taken into custody for Felony Child Abuse, Vehicular Assault, Leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury, and DUI.

Colorado Ave was closed during the investigation and reopened around 5:30 p.m.
