COLORADO SPRINGS – The Transportation Security Administration discovered a loaded firearm in a passenger’s carry-on bag Friday morning at the Colorado Springs Airport.

The TSA found a loaded .40 caliber Smith and Wesson MP40 in the passenger’s bag when it was screened through an x-ray machine.  TSA agents interviewed the passenger, took possession of the weapon and allowed the passenger to continue onto their flight.

Agents said this is the 10th weapon seized at the Springs Aiport in 2018. Agents seized a total of nine last year in Colorado Springs in 2017.

The passenger could face criminal charges and might face a civil penalty up to $13,000.

The TSA said guns can be brought in checked baggage if properly packed and locked in a hard-sided container. Ammunition can also be brought along in checked bags.
